What is it?

The Santa María de Albarracín Foundation is a non-profit organization aiming at granting Albarracín the cultural landmark status it deserves, given its extraordinary heritage and scenery. This groundbreaking heritage management project intends to promote the well-planned, sustainable development of this unique town by restoring and reactivating its rich cultural heritage.

The Santa María de Albarracín Foundation was set up in 1996 under the sponsorship of the institutions that make up its Board. Its headquarters are located at the old Episcopal Palace, previously renovated during an applied training programme, and its main goal is to take up and further develop the outstanding results obtained by prior vocational school projects.

The following goals are especially worth mentioning among its statutory guidelines:

  • Social, cultural and economic development of the region

  • Restoration, preservation and management of cultural heritage

  • Promotion and boosting of its cultural and historical legacy

  • Development of different cultural and educational activities

  • Creation of new means of collaboration between different entities

Architectural conservation is one of the most important fields of activity in the Foundation. Several important monuments have been largely recovered since it was created and most of them have subsequently been managed by the Foundation itself, namely the Santa María, Pintores and Jualianeta residences, the museums and monuments that are part of the Albarracín, Espacios y Tesoros (Spaces and Treasures) network, the Santa María auditorium-church and the Foundation’s congress centre.

The ongoing regeneration of the town is achieved by implementing a vast cultural programme based on different actions developed in the context of courses and seminars, exhibitions and concerts. An artistic creation programme has taken place for quite some time now: aimed initially at professional painters, it was later expanded to include a highly requested complementary training programme for artwork restorers. This programme is an all-year-round catalyst that establishes Albarracín as a cultural landmark.

Nowadays Albarracín is also regarded as a leading conference and congress town. The infrastructures and services provided by the Foundation make it very easy to organize any collective event with the added support of a great number of dainty hotels available in the town. Albarracín is an ideal setting for the gathering of any professional group looking for a special, charming place in which convenient facilities and full organizational support, provided by the Santa María de Albarracín Foundation, are readily available.
