A visit to the Albarracín Cathedral will allow you to learn about the origins of the most important monument in the city.
Possibly the current temple is located where the old main mosque of the Muslim Albarracín was built, later replaced by a first Cathedral inaugurated in 1200. Until now we knew little about this primitive Christian medieval construction.
From 1527 a total renovation of that first Cathedral would begin. In three different stages, the chancel, choir and main nave were dismantled, which were replaced, step by step, by the new Gothic-Renaissance building, in which the main nave stands out, designed by the famous French architect Pierres Vedel. The works would conclude with the regrowth of the tower.
Late in the 16th century, the main altarpiece dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior, a dedication of the Cathedral, was also renewed. The altarpiece of San Pedro also belongs to this moment, which due to the quality of its carving in pine wood without polychrome, makes it one of the treasures of this monument.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the council decided to adapt the temple to the new aesthetics of the Baroque. Windows, moldings, pillars... are transformed adapting to the new trend, while everything is covered with the color sense of the moment. In this same century, the Pilar chapel, the most important of the Cathedral, is renewed.
During the recent restoration, we have discovered and brought to light a set of findings whose interpretation allows us to discover some hitherto unknown aspects of the history of the Cathedral and which become another attraction of the visit.
